On April 1st, Morgan Smith competed in the WV Bridge Design & Build Contest sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Transportation and hosted at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Beckley, WV after being selected as a finalist in the preliminary design contest. She qualified for the contest by submitting and refining a digital model of a bridge using software under the guidance and supervision of her physics teacher, Mr. Hill. Once selected as a finalist, she built a bridge out of balsa wood that was tested for its strength at the competition in Beckley against middle and high school students from around West Virginia. Her bridge had a higher strength-to-weight ratio than any other competitor's bridge.
On Thursday, May 12th Dr. Yang from West Virginia Institute of Technology came to GCHS to present her with a gift card in recognition of her outstanding performance.
Thank you Mr. Daniel Hill and Mr. Jared Fitzwater for photos of this event.
