Barb Runyon

In a recent announcement, Gilmer County Schools announced Mrs. Barbara Runyon as the distinguished Service Person of the Year for the 2023-2024 academic year. Mrs. Runyon's journey as a full-time employee with the school district started in 2011 when she assumed the role of cafeteria manager at Gilmer County High School.

Mrs. Runyon’s connection to Gilmer County runs deep, despite originally hailing from Leavittsburg, Ohio. Recounting her roots, she recalls summer visits to Gilmer County, where she eventually met her husband, Kenneth. The couple settled in the Lockney area, and both their daughters, Tami and Ashley, were born in West Virginia. However, economic circumstances led them back to Ohio, where Mrs. Runyon worked as the head manager at McDonald's.  Though they had moved to Ohio, their hearts remained in Gilmer County, and Mrs. Runyon soon found herself employed as a substitute cook and custodian for the Board of Education. Her dedication and hard work soon earned her a full-time position as the Cafeteria Manager at Gilmer County High School

Speaking about her role, Mrs. Runyon expresses her joy in working alongside students, staff, and faculty, highlighting the camaraderie and teamwork within her workplace. “I enjoy working with the students, staff, and faculty,” said Runyon. “My job is made easier by having an amazing group of coworkers. We all work as a team to provide quality food to our school.”

Additionally, she takes pride in the improvements made to the cafeteria during her tenure, including the reorganization of the kitchen space and the vibrant transformation of the main dining area, accomplished with the assistance of Blair Fisher, our esteemed art teacher.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Mrs. Runyon finds solace in her hobbies and family. She nurtures her love for gardening, passion for travel, and enjoys crafting with her daughters. Her granddaughter, Kenna, holds a special place in her heart, and she shares outdoor pursuits with her husband, including hunting and farm work.

Reflecting on her recent accolade, Mrs. Runyon humbly accepts the honor of being named Service Person of the Year by Gilmer County Schools, further solidifying her commitment to serving the educational community and fostering a positive environment for all.
