Following yesterday's assembly, the class of 2024 visited GCES! Amidst their footsteps echoing, the students felt inspired, realizing just how much they've progressed since their elementary school days. Students and former teachers reconnected, and future GCHS grads enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the monumental achievements of our seniors. #gogilmer #classof2024

🔬 Mr. Hill's AP Chemistry class demonstrated cool chemistry experiments yesterday! Mr. Buckley and Mrs. Wilsons’ 5th period classes joined in to spectate in the lab. First, Jozlyn Brenwald demonstrated the "Iodine Clock Reaction," a demonstration of chemical kinetics where colorless solutions suddenly turn dark blue. Bayley Frashure presented the "Metal Ion Flame Test," demonstrating how different metal ions emit different colors when heated in a flame. Spectators had fun speculating what color the flame would be with different reagents. Stepping outside (and several feet back), Stevie Starsick showed the "Iron Thermite Reaction," a dramatic reaction where iron oxide and aluminum powder react vigorously to produce molten iron. The reaction produces temperatures up to 4500°F, which was enough to fracture the bottom of the clay pot the reaction was happening over top of. After stepping back even further for safety, Madison Jarvis followed with the "Reaction of Sodium Metal with Water,". The demonstration illustrated the exothermic reaction between sodium and water, producing hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide. 🧪🔥

It was Teacher Appreciation Week at GCHS! The Gilmer County Board of Education Office treated staff to coffee, donuts, cookies, McDonald's sweet tea, and other tasty sweets. In addition, Principal Payne gifted teachers with cloth bags filled with handy items, including hand-crocheted pot holders and a hand-knitted grocery bag holder for the kitchen. " I cannot begin to thank you for your hard work this year," said Payne in a message to teachers. "As we begin to close out another school year, remember that you DO make a difference and the relationships you are building with the students will last a lifetime." We want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our teachers! Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to providing a high quality education to all students in Gilmer County do not go unnoticed. #gogilmer #teacherappreciationweek
