On this day, we give pause to honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. As part of Celebrate Freedom week, students in social studies classes will explore the impact of this event, study the bravery of first responders, and reflect upon the indomitable American spirit that shone brightly in the days that followed. Let’s come together in the same spirit of compassion and solidarity as we pay tribute to those affected by this tragic event.

Students, are you interested in U.S. military service academies? Check out the flyer below for an exciting opportunity!

📚🏆 Success starts with being present! Don’t miss out on valuable lessons and opportunities. Show up, stay engaged, and attend for the win! 🌟 #BeThere #StudentSuccess

Updated with more events!

Attendance matters, and September is Attendance Awareness Month! Please read this important message from our CIS liaison, Alecia Martin:
During the 2023/2024 school year, 118 students at GCHS were identified as being “chronically absent”. This means that they were absent for 18 or more days or 10% of the school year. Research shows there are many reasons that limit students from regularly attending school, including transportation issues, lack of financial means, childcare needs for siblings, housing insecurity, lack of clean clothing, food insecurities, or lack of mental health and supports for students. This is an issue nationwide; not just a Gilmer County issue, however Gilmer County has the ability to make a huge difference in the lives of our children!
As we move forward with the school year, please note that attendance initiatives will be in place to ensure that we are addressing the concerns with chronic absenteeism. Students and families have direct access to Communities In Schools which will provide supports that address the wide range of barriers affecting students and families. The school will be contacting families when a child has 3 or more unexcused absences to obtain absence notes and to discuss any concerns there may be.
Being PRESENT matters! There is NO substitute for showing up. In school. In person. In life.

This week in Mrs. McClain's social studies class, students explored topographical mapping. On Day 1, they created a map to trace elevation changes from the school to the creek behind the library. GPS devices were then used to record these elevations. This project showcased an impressive integration of geography, math, science, and technology. #Education #STEM #TopographicalMapping
