Teacher Appreciation Week at Gilmer County High School was absolutely amazing! A huge thank you to Mrs. Barker and the GCHS Student Council for organizing such a special week for our teachers.

We kicked off Monday with a coffee bar featuring a variety of creamers and coffee delivered to staff members. Thank you to Foggy Dale Farms for sponsoring Monday’s treats!

Tuesday morning started with delicious McDonald’s breakfast sandwiches for our staff. Thank you to Mr. Fox and Mr. Payne for sponsoring Tuesday’s breakfast!

On Wednesday, teachers enjoyed a fun Dirty Soda Bar complete with a variety of sodas and tasty add-ins like raspberry syrup and coconut cream. A big thank you to Ratliff Insurance for sponsoring Wednesday’s refreshments!

Thursday featured a snack trolley packed with goodies like cookies, popcorn, and more, delivered right to teachers’ classroom doors. Thank you to Kristen Smith for making Thursday extra special!

We wrapped up the week on Friday with a magnificent charcuterie spread provided by Foodie Mama and sponsored by Jason Barr and Kelly Barr. It was the perfect ending to an incredible week celebrating our teachers!

Thank you again to everyone who helped make Teacher Appreciation Week such a success. Our teachers truly felt appreciated all week long! 🍎🎉 #gogilmer #lovemyWVschool #teacherappreciationweek

GCHS band concert poster - thursday may 7 GCHS gym
From Friday May 1st to Saturday May 2nd, six of our GCHS musicians participated in the annual Glenville State University Honor Band Festival. Participants in the Concert Band were Marelly Medrano (1st chair clarinet), Catelynn Parsons (1st chair oboe), and Ellaina Rogers (8th chair clarinet). In the first-ever GSU Honors Jazz Ensemble, we had Maria Mincey who placed 5th chair trumpet! And lastly- in the first-ever Honors Percussion Ensemble, we had Clark Kirk who placed 3rd chair and Georgia Carpenter who placed 13th chair! These students represented our school/county with excellence and pride. We're very proud of all their accomplishments and cannot wait to see how they will fare during next year's honor band season.

"It's so special to bring students to my alma mater's honors festival every year," Mrs. "K" Buckley says. "Participating in these when I was a high school student as well as a college student was integral to my education experience and gave me an opportunity to become a better musician. I love bringing students to these events because not only do they become better musicians, but they also make wonderful memories that last for a lifetime."

Marelly Medrano also was invited to play with the official GSU Concert Band! This is a prestigious honor and a testament to her abilities as a musician. This concert was held on Friday May 1st! Congratulations to Marelly!

🌿 6th grade students from GCHS and GCCA had a great time at Cedar Creek for Conservation Day on Wednesday, April 29th.

Students rotated through hands-on stations where they learned about water quality, forestry, wildlife, snakes, beekeeping, soil, horticulture, and even how to navigate using a compass!

It was a day full of learning, exploring, and connecting with nature in the outdoors. Awesome job, 6th grade! 🍃

On April 17-19 Breanna and Rayanna White traveled with Mr. Hill to the WVU Tech Campus in Beckley to compete in the annual West Virginia Design and Build Contest. 🌉🏗️

In order to be selected as finalists, they competed in preliminary rounds against students from around the state by building and optimizing bridges using computer software. For the finals in Beckley, they constructed a bridge out of balsa wood and glue which was then tested for its strength. Their bridge was able to hold 5200 grams (11.4 pounds) of sand before breaking! The trip also included a stop at the New River Gorge bridge to admire its engineering and construction.

As the school year begins to wind down, we want to take a moment to sincerely thank the many businesses and organizations that generously donated to support our monthly homeroom celebrations for Gilmer County 6th–8th grade students.

Each month, 6th-8th grade homerooms competed for the highest attendance rate, and those winning groups were rewarded with a special treat. It would not have been possible without your kindness and support. Your contributions helped us celebrate student commitment and made attendance something exciting and meaningful.

We truly appreciate your encouragement of our students and your investment in their success.

To our parents and families: thank you for the role you play each day. Please keep up the great work encouraging and ensuring your children get to school this last month of school. Your support makes a lasting difference!
Together, we are building strong habits and celebrating success. 💙
