Students in grades 9–12 may bring an out-of-school guest to the GCHS Homecoming Dance. Students planning to bring a guest must complete and return the Non-GCHS Dance Guest Application to the high school office by Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Science in Action: Part V! 🔬
Our students in Mrs. Ramezan's class continued their exploration of cellular respiration by investigating the amount of energy stored in some of their everyday snacks!
Students first made predictions about which snack they thought would provide the most energy and discussed whether that energy would be enough to support our day-to-day activities, especially for athletes with higher energy demands.
Using nutritional labels and precise measurements, students determined the mass and serving size of each sample and calculated the calories per gram, or energy yield. They then modeled how our bodies break down food during cellular respiration and observed how energy is released in the process.
To bring the concept to life, students also modeled the release of thermal energy using water, giving them a hands-on way to see how the energy stored in food can be transformed and released.
Another great example of students connecting biology, chemistry, and everyday life through hands-on science! 🧪

The GCHS Homecoming Parade will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM. Students will walk to and from the parade with their homeroom teachers and will be supervised throughout the activity. Yesterday, homeroom teachers sent home the GCHS Homecoming Parade Form, which must be returned by Friday, September 25 2026.
Please evaluate the options on the form carefully, as it will allow you to indicate whether you/your child:
➡️Will remain on campus and not participate
➡️Will walk to the parade with their HR teacher and return afterward
➡️Will walk to... and be signed out following the parade
➡️Is a parade participant who will be transported to the parade lineup and will walk back with their HR teacher

Students in Mrs. Ramezan’s class continued their investigation of the microscopic world by examining microorganisms found in three different yogurt samples to determine which sample contained the greatest number of microorganisms. Using a microcentrifuge, students separated the samples into distinct layers, including a pellet and supernatant.
Students then extracted microorganisms from the pellet layer and prepared microscope slides to observe living, moving microorganisms under the microscope. GCHS will offer tutoring afterschool this school year. If your student needs to stay and work on classwork, homework or projects, a teacher will be available, Mondays-Thursdays, until-5:45pm. Activity buses will run the main routes, Rt. 33 and Rt. 5, to deliver students after tutoring is over each evening. Tutoring will begin on Tuesday, September 8th at GCHS. Please call the school if you have any questions.
Regular school attendance is one of the most important things families can do to support their child's success. Being at school each day helps students stay connected, keep up with learning, build strong relationships, and develop habits that will benefit them for years to come.

🔬 Science in Action: Part 2!
Our students in Ms. Ramezan's class continued their hands-on exploration of the microscopic world by investigating microorganisms found on everyday surfaces around our school.
Students collected samples from various surfaces and cultured them on agar plates. The cultures were then incubated over a five-day period before students examined their results to see just how much microbial life was hiding in places we interact with every day.
And yes… they even swabbed Mr. Fox’s radio to find out what was growing on it! 😳🦠
Along the way, students gained experience using specialized laboratory equipment and putting real scientific investigation skills into practice.
Who knew our school had so much microscopic life? 🧫🔬

Each year, only two students from West Virginia are selected to participate alongside student leaders from across the country. Delegates meet with U.S. Senators, the President, Cabinet members, members of the national media, Supreme Court representatives, and other key policymakers. Each delegate also receives a $12,500 undergraduate college scholarship.
